“Not So Fast!”

We all have those blah days where we don’t want to wear any makeup, don’t want to pretty up our hair and just want to walk out that door as is. Personally, I wouldn’t be caught dead without my eyebrows and some lipstick…that’s just the way this little mama rolls. No eyebrows, no dice! (Please know that I do have eyebrows and not some weird bald section over my lids due to tweezing malfunctions. I just prefer to make them a little more fabulous than what’s already there.)

Here are some Oak Tree Vintage favorites for looking chic on those lazy or on the rush day’s.

“Hair”

Did you just wake up but look like you took your finger out of a wall socket? Well here’s an easy quick fix that will help you bluff a bad do!

Nothing says “Sexy Messy” like a great head scarf like those from Pinup Girl Clothing!

This is one accessory that will take you from a.m to p.m. in one easy step. Scarf’s don’t take up much room, so keep a black one in your purse or glove compartment for a hair saving pick-me -up!

These little pretties run $23 at Pinup Girl Clothing, not to bad for a time saving quick fix. Low on the dollar? No worries. There are always great finds at your local thrift store! While everyone else

is passing up the very understated scarf section, you’ll be there  picking up the creme of the crop in low key elegance.

“LipStick”

The power of color compels you… to please please please not go out looking like a muted monotone manikin! You don’t have to clown up your pretty little pout, but please add some color to your on the run look. Let’s face it. Lipstick was invented for a reason. Someone, somewhere said, OMG! These chicks look like HELL-P! Not really. Lipstick actually dates back to Ancient Mesopotamia. Even then, humans had the need to distinguish themselves among others. Lipstick, on a bad face day, can help distinguish whether or not you took the time to invest some love to your look.

Oak Tree Vintage recommends …

Neautrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm SPF 20. It comes in 6 subtle shades that give your lips just enough color to kill the monotony of a flesh toned lip, but also protects them from the sun while adding a nice sheer gloss. $8.99 http://www.neutrogena.com

Bésame Cosmetics Crimson Cream Rouge. This is truly a magnificent product. Keeping this in your purse will ensure light color for your lips when applied lightly, deeper color when layered on and rosey cheeks for that  express p.m. look! $22.00 http://www.besamecosmetics.com

Bottom line my darlings, don’t neglect to spruce up your on the go routine and always carry some quick fixer-upper’s in your purse and in your car. A little something goes a long way. You never know who you’ll run into and you certainly don’t want to be the topic of the day at the salon!

Upgrading Your Go-To Look!

I am absolutely fascinated by the way other women wear their make-up, how much they wear, what color scheme they decided on to achieve their look, and does it match with their hair and outfit. I’ll be honest, I have made millions of mental make-overs in my adult life and the reality is, we all need to change our look, if not at least upgrade our look every so often. How does one know which colors suit us, how much to apply? And why, despite the fact that we have a drawerful of the stuff, and spend at least 10 minutes putting it on in the morning, does our end-result look the same as it did yesterday? It’s easy, FEAR. We are afraid to change it up in fear that we will not be sporting the shadow the right way, that we won’t be able to rock that other lipstick color like we own it and fear that if we decide to go dewy skinned rather than matte we’ll look like we’ve never heard the word blot!

There’s two solutions to this problem. First of all, experiment. Instead of parking in front of the TV and watching other peoples drama as if there wasn’t enough in your own life either at home or work, play with your make-up and experiment with your shadows, your blushes, your lipsticks and figure out what colors and styles look good on you. Stay open minded when doing it, in other words, don’t poo poo it just because you are not used to it and if it works, write it down for future reference.

The next step to remedying the bland go to look is by learning how to apply your make-up…correctly! Yes my lovlies, there is a way to achieve make-up application stardom.  Should make-up be applied with a brush or should you just dab it on and hope for the best?  It’s been said around the make-up world that foundation should always be applied with a brush in order for it to  be perfectly blended and diffused. Another reason is that it’s more sanitary, you make better use of every drop or swipe of foundation you apply and you can manage the layering much easier than with a sponge.

A fresh, unmade-up face will always be more appealing than one caked in unflattering layers of foundation. But go on – indulge my curiosity. How much makeup, if any, do you wear? Have you ever mastered what is that impossible, magazine-generated mirage, the smoky eye? Where did you learn to apply it? How much is too much?

Women are beautiful, whether made-up; natural or glammed, women are beautiful simply because they women.

Perfuming Your Way To Perfection!

Have you ever thought about how you properly apply perfume? Applying a perfume is a ritual and for many women it can incite nostalgia. Whether your mother or grandmother was a perfume wearer or you’re particularly attached to a certain scent, every woman has a distinct routine that she submits to when applying it, but are you doing it right?

There may not be a definite way to apply perfume, but there are steps you can take to ensure your fragrance will last. Here’s a few tips on perfume perfection:

  1. Apply perfume before you get dressed. Many women already know the key pulse points such as behind the ears and the wrists, however, there are a number of other areas that can be effective such as behind knees and in the crease of the elbow where the natural heat of the skin slowly releases the ingredients in the perfume
  2. The old spritz and rub technique actually damages the scent. Don’t rub your wrists together once applied as this can break down the notes of the scent
  3. Many women believe that lotions, body gels, and mini atomisers are overkill, but layering a moisturizer or bath oil under your perfume can ensure a long-lasting scent. Moisturize your skin while damp and the product will fully absorb into the skin. Before dressing, spray your fragrance on the pressure points mentioned above and let it dry naturally.
  4. Beyond application techniques, storage and expiration dates are factors we seldom think of when applying perfume. You can tell if your perfume has seen better days because the top notes begin to smell sharp, rather than fresh. As a rule, a fragrances should last about a year but as many women constantly change their fragrances, you should keep an eye out for any changes in the scent. You will get the most wear our of your fragrance if you store it right. Perfume shouldn’t be left where it can be affected by sunlight as the heat can damage the ingredients.

Are you a spritz and rub type of girl or do you subscribe to the pre-teen favorite application style of spraying into the air and dancing your way through the flying particles?

Cheap Tricks!

Do you ever look at photos and think, “Wow! Look at that hairline!” ? Not all of us are born with a thick full head of hair, and let’s face it, we can’t help staring at those who rock the full bodied hairline. Women, even some men, who face this dilemma avoid wearing hairstyles that require them to comb the hair back in order to avoid showing off unnecessary cranium. Well, here’s a cheap little trick for those who need a little bit of a filler.

Find the closest shade of eyeshadow that best matches your hair color. In my case, it’s black. I personally prefer to use the black cream to powder eyeliner that comes in a pot. Now, you need a make-up brush that’s chunky and flat, such as a blending brush or a flathead shadow brush. Once you have your hairstyle in place, lightly brush the color onto your scalp in circular motions, blending it in lightly at first and adding on to your taste. PSSTBrushing some cream liner that matches your haircolor over the gray hairs after your hair has been set is a quick fix to tattle tale grays. Practice makes perfect, so be sure to give it a try a few times at home before you take your new trick out for a public spin.

Powder Puff Gals!

Women throughout the ages have experimented with beauty treatments to enhance natural features, slow the aging process and care for the outer body.Every lovely lady wants to feel silky, smooth and fine to the touch, right? Of course we do! Sometimes we want to body butter our skin, and sometimes we want to powder it alllll up! Body dusting is a dying art, but most people don’t know that powder is just as potent as cream when it comes to locking in that moisture. A dusted (powdered) body feels beautiful and many are made with a variety of powders with different weights, textures, smoothness, absorbency and scents. Dusting Powders help your clothes slide on and off easier, which is really useful when you’ve just got out of the shower and you’re in a hurry to get dolled up and ready to go out. (It’s also really useful when you want your clothes off in a hurry, on those… special occasions)

Historically, dusting powders were used by both men and women to absorb perspiration and help prevent body odor. Some people still use dusting powder as a way of enjoying a favorite fragrance, to absorb perspiration and skin oils, and to prevent skin chafing. Dusting was an essential part of the life of every aristocrat in the 17th and 18th centuries and we think it’s about time it had a comeback. My favorite is Chanel No5 After Bath Powder. Chanel describes it as: A silky powder which absorbs moisture after a bath, leaving skin scented with inimitable N°5. Unique loose powder absorbs moisture for cooling comfort as it imparts a light, luminous finish, leaving skin soft, silky and scented. Contains Vitamin E and essential amino acids to protect from free radical and environmental damage.I describe it as a must have for all ladies of whom are fond of the Chanel No5 scent and a perfect addition to your after shower routine. For you lasses with more sensitive skin, I’d recommend Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Dusting Powder. It is natural, talc-free, absorbent and non-irritating. The scent is pleasant and light, but does not come with a powder puff.

Powder puffs are pieces of soft material used for the application of various types of loose powder, body shimmer or talcum powder. Powder puffs are the tool of choice when it comes to applying loose powder, especially if you’re covering a large area. Historically, powder puffs have been made of very fine down feathers, cotton, fine fleece, etc. In modern times synthetic materials such as velour or fur are used for powder puffs. In addition to softness, an important characteristic of powder puffs is their ability to hold powder.

Be glamorous, dip a powder puff in shimmering body powder and dust lightly all over that beautiful skin. Feeling a lil naughty? Try highlighting your cleavage by dusting shimmering powder underneath a low-cut blouse for some eye catching highlights.

There is so much for a girl to choose from. Between rice powders, honey powders, flower dusting powders all scented with an array of flowers, perfumes and oils, there is no excuse for letting the experience of body dusting pass you by. So come on you sexy little devils, slip into some dusting powder before slipping into your Naughty Little Things!

Skin Clarity Through Brewer’s Yeast

Brewer’s yeast, the one-celled fungus called Saccharomyces cerevisiaeis, is one of the most important ingredients in brewing beer. It’s responsible for metabolic processes that produce ethanol, carbon dioxide, and a whole range of other metabolic byproducts that contribute to the flavor and finish of beer. It’s also responsible for the happiness and satisfaction it brings to the beer drinking community.

Some studies have found that brewer’s yeast may improve acne. How can we relate it with acne? Actually, when we consume more sugar, we need more chromium as chromium controls blood sugar level. Studies show that people with unstable blood sugar level have more severe acne and when these patients are treated with 400 micro grams of chromium in the form of yeast, their skin improves. It also maintains the skin with a healthy pH 5 level. Brewer’s yeast is a rich source of minerals: Chromium, the essential trace mineral that helps the body maintain normal blood sugar levels; protein; B-complex vitamins, and selenium which helps the body make antioxidant enzymes and helps prevent cell damage.  “The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods,” concluded some 80 percent of subjects given brewer’s yeast for five months showed either marked improvement in acne symptoms or were completely healed.

Be advised that there are some side effects associated with excess use of brewer’s yeast

  • Trouble in breathing, skin becoming itchy, swollen or having a rash.
  • Migraine like headaches can occur
  • complain of excessive gas and bloating.

Some people have allergies to yeast. Certain medications may interact with brewer’s yeast and it is recommended that you discuss the use of brewer’s yeast and your current medication(s) with your doctor or pharmacist or conduct some research of your own and see if this is an alternative to the prescription medications that can ultimately cause more harm to your body in the long run.

Brewer’s yeast is available in several forms. It comes in flakes, as a powder, tablet and in liquid forms. Taking 1 – 2 Tbsp of brewer’s yeast after meals is recommended in order to help your body process the sugar in the food you just ate.

So ladies and gents, don’t rush to your refrigerators and start pouring beer on your face, although it makes for a fun way of ridding your Frigidaire of any and all NON-CRAFT paraphernalia… you know what yellow water I’m talking about. I would on the other hand encourage you to make brewer’s yeast and craft beer part of your beauty regime! Rejuvenate your skin, the crafty way!

“Leg-Naked”

One accessory I find to be sexy but not always convenient are pantyhose. What’s sexier than wowing your man in the evening hours like seductively slipping off those stockings and putting on a show for your honey. Well, as much fun as that can be, I have to admit I am not the most graceful or careful of people when it comes to rocking the hose…pantyhose! I’m talkin pantyhose! You dirty birdies!

Like many gals out there, my legs don’t quite match my top half without some on the spot color enhancement. So rather than to sit there with the clear nail polish on standby just in case I snag my stockings in one of my many ungracious moments of the day, I resort to one of these few tips to give my legs the pantyhose look.

  1. Airbrush Legs by Sally Hansen. Give your legs a light tan or pantyhose look with this lightweight leg makeup. One thing to keep in mind, this stuff can get messy. Be sure to spray while standing at a good distance from furniture or cabinets and lay a dark towel on the floor where you will be standing. Also, just a heads up, sometimes the spray can stops working after a few uses so be sure to have a back up plan, like tip #2.
  2. Liquid foundation a couple shades darker than your own skin tone mixed with some body butter is a quick fix to pale legs. I prefer this method because I decide and control the level of tint I want on my legs. This is also a great way to put to use all those foundations you bought that were much to dark for your face and never returned to the drugstore.
  3. Make-Up Forever Face and Body Liquid Make-up is a waterproof, ultra-light, water based gel containing no emulsifiers and provides a totally natural satin finish. For use on the legs and body, Make-Up Forever recommends you apply a fine layer, let dry three minutes, then blot the excess with a tissue.

Let’s face it, not everyone was born with flawless legs, and as we get older freckles and veins become more noticeable. Create the coveted appearance of  beautiful airbrushed skin on your own legs with some leg makeup for those special occasions in which you desire to ditch the pantyhose and go leg-naked!
